My Engagement Story

My Engagement Story

September 1st, 2019

It was a Sunday afternoon when my now Fiancé popped the question at his 23rd birthday party. I remember feeling extremely nervous all day, but I was still over the moon excited. I know you’re thinking, why was I nervous if I did not know about it. WEEELLL… I kind of did.

Earlier in the week, I had accidentally overheard Brandon and his Grandfather speaking on the phone. The call was originally about an overachieving AT&T contractor that would not take no for an answer.

  ONE HOUR LATER…

I climb on the bed scrolling through social media when I hear Pop Pop on the other end of the phone line say, “I can’t believe your mom kept the secret for this long.” My brain starts to churn. Brandon is nonchalantly giving two-word reply’s deterring him from any more talk about the subject. Pop Pop did not get the hint, he continued with, “I think you two are going to be great together.” AAAWWWEEEE… thanks, Pop-Pop! Brandon proceeds to turn the phone volume down, little did he know I heard what he said. Now it is hard to hide something from me, I like to think that I am a pretty good detective. Finally, the call ended and I calmly ask Brandon what his mom was keeping a secret, he answered with something to try and get me off of the scent of his plan. All week I had been thinking, “Is he going to finally do it?” I would continuously come up with scenarios in my head like he would do it during the Birthday cake song so I wouldn’t ask questions as to why everyone’s phones were out. Then I stopped myself, I shouldn’t get my hopes up as I have before. I thought never mind it isn’t going to happen.

FAST FORWARD… the weekend has finally come. Saturday morning, I ran to my mom’s house to get my hair dyed. While in the process she asks me about marrying Brandon. An hour later I am getting ready to hop in the shower when my Aunt stops me and again asks me about when Brandon and I were going to get hitched. (My aunt actually didn’t know that he was going to propose the next day). My mind starts racing again!!

A little later I go to lunch with my gals. Veracruz was packed and our service was kind of slow, therefore it gave more time for conversation. I am telling the girls how Brandon said I needed to look all prettied up for his party so he can show me off. Mind you, he spoils me once a month and takes me to get my nails done. (AANNNDDD the next stop was to get our nails done). My gal best friend since I was 5 starts looking over me to my sister who is on my other side. The two were giving each other weird looks and Bell then asks my sister to go to the bathroom with her for a second. OKAY. WHY? During this time, I am again asking myself, “MMHHMM something is going on.” They both come back to the table and neither would tell me what it was about. I used the excuse,” It’s not my birthday! What’s going on?”

At the nail salon, it was just me and my sister. I asked her once again what Bell wanted to know while we were at the restaurant. She wouldn’t tell me.

  ONE HOUR LATER…

My mom shows up to get Kassy. I asked her what errand she had told us she needed to run before she came to get my younger sister. This woman… would not tell me. Now I am really thinking something is going on. “Why is everyone being so secretive around me today?” I let out. The rest of the day I wonder and even talked about my future bachelorette party with Bell and Leah (another GF) while out running last-minute errands for my love’s party the following day.

THE DAY OF… Everyone starts to arrive, and I emerge from my bedroom to find a huge wrapped box on the table. I pick it up and start shaking it. “What’s in this?” But I already knew.

IT’S THE RING!! It reminded me of that morning, Brandon had asked me to help him open his presents. But why? It’s not my birthday. The day goes on, greeting people and eating delicious food that I took two bites of, my stomach was in knots at that point because I knew it was coming. (Thank you for the nerves in my stomach Father).

Sometime around 4 O’clock, we begin with the presents. The infamous BOX was last. Brandon looks at me and asks, “Are you gonna help me with this one?” (I didn’t) He starts to open it and all eyes and camera lenses are on him! The box, of course, was a box within a box within a box, within a box… the last and smallest one had the ring box, I saw him pull it out and was like “OHH GOD” sure enough.

“You know the only thing I want for my Birthday is you…” And the rest is wedding planning and kisses!

Following Moments: I was presented with beautiful roses (which I am in the process of home drying a few of them) and I give Brandon this look, and he is like what? I tell him I knew, his face drops. I proceed to tell everyone what I had learned the past week: overhearing the phone conversation and all the secrets.  I ask Kassy what question Bell asked while they were in the bathroom, the answer “Is Brandon going to propose to Shayna tomorrow?” (Kassy did not know, she asked our mom and she told her yes) I asked my mom what errand she had to run, she hands me a pandora box with a charm inside that is in the shape of a ring box and when you open it there is a ring and the word YES! Inscribed inside.

I feel very blessed to have the man of my dreams forever and I cannot wait to marry him next year!
